14 Androgynous Haircuts You'll Want to Take Straight to Your Stylist

They blur the line between traditional masculinity and femininity.

Androgynous haircuts are the ultimate act of freedom of expression.

"A gender-neutral haircut breaks free from this [heteronormative] ideal and embraces hair as a tool to let yourself be your authentic self," says Sara-Olivia Granberger, a professional hairstylist and co-owner of Hairrari LA, a gender-neutral barbershop with locations in New York City and Los Angeles.

As far as what's considered an androgynous haircut, well, the truth is, any haircut can be androgynous as it's all about who's rocking the cut, says Granberger. "Overall, I think the most gender-neutral haircut is when one plays between the contrast of long and short," she says. "But you could rock a regular long haircut and make that gender-neutral by wearing a more masculine style or vice versa."

1. Afro

If you have curly hair, play up your texture by opting for an afro haircut, which looks amazing on all genders.

2. Mullet

"One of my favorite haircuts that I find rather gender-neutral is the mullet," says Granberger. "Mullets have made a huge comeback and is a great way to express gender-neutral because it encompasses both long and short. "

3. Bixie

bixie haircut was huge in the '90s, and like all good trends, it's made its way back. It's a mix between a pixie and a bob, two classic haircuts, and looks amazing on all hair textures.

4. Buzz Cut

buzz cut isn't a look for the faint of heart, but if you're willing to take the plunge, the results are so worth it. Just look at Demi Lovato, who recently cut their hair and proved a buzz cut is a power move.

5. Buzzed Side Burns

"One of my signature cuts that I like to do is a longer haircut or short scissor cut with buzzed sideburns," says Granberger. "It's a subtle way to add an edgy look to a "normal" haircut, and it allows you to not commit to a full undercut yet slowly transition into the idea of something shorter."

6. Asymmetrical Pixie

Any pixie haircut is androgynous, but if you're looking to switch things up, go with an asymmetrical pixie which will add length and variety to your look.

7. Locs

Whether you want faux-locs or are ready to commit to the real thing, locs are loved by people of all genders because of their cool look and versatility. You can keep your locs long or short, thin or thick, and can style them into other looks without having to worry about detangling afterward.

8. Faux Hawk

Orange Is the New Black star Samira Wiley makes a strong case for a faux-hawk haircut. It's edgy and badass.

9. Curly Shag

Shag haircuts are all the rage lately because they have that effortless, lived-in vibe. If you have curly hair, the results are nothing short of spectacular as it gives the haircut natural texture and movement.

10. Clavicle-Length Bob

Bob haircuts are another great androgynous haircut option. If you're someone who likes to play with different hairstyles, though, consider keeping your bob clavicle-length so you can still get experimental with different looks like a bun, ponytail, or half-up half-down style.

11. Long Pixie

A pixie haircut with length at the top of your head is chic and cool. Not only can you switch up your look by tying the long hair into a braid or bun, but you can also play with different hair colors.

12. Bowl Cut

The cringeworthy bowl haircut you remember as a kid just got a major upgrade. It's a popular androgynous haircut that looks amazing on people of all genders. Just don't forget, the most important part when rocking a bowl cut is the attitude.

13. Long Hair

For those who don't want to give up their length or want to try getting longer hair altogether, rest assured long haircuts aren't assigned to any particular gender. Anyone can look good with long, cascading hair.

14. Undercut

An undercut haircut is perfect for those who want to shed some length without committing to a full buzz cut. Bonus points if you get a design that peaks through when you pull the rest of your hair up into a bun or ponytail.
